Featured Notified Pro plugin: Notification GriP [Jailbreak]

Posted on 18 Sep 2010 by Thomas

I’ve written about the extension a few times before, but Notified Pro ($2.99) is basically a complete re-imagining of the iOS notification system. It took a while to come into its own, but I think it’s one of the premier reasons to jailbreak the iPhone.

There are already a few first party plugins to play with (Notificationbar and Statusbar), but I think I may have found a new favourite in the third party Notification GriP  plugin by Samball. It’s customizable, works reliably, and even supports landscape orientation.

The Notification GriP plugin takes after the GriP (Growl for iPhone) project, which was an entirely different notification system for the iPhone that was also based around alternative pop-ups. The standard Notified pop-up controls still apply (tap on the app icon to launch it, tap on message to bring up Notified, tap on the ‘x’ to dismiss), but the real power of the GriP Notifications plugin is its customizability and landscape compatibility.

GriP is the first plugin I know of that actually displayed Notified notifications correctly in landscape, which goes a long way towards making the system feel like part of iOS.

The plugin also allows you to  dictate how long pop-ups are displayed, how many are displayed, and where on the screen to display them (top or bottom). Aside from the Statusbar plugin, GriP is the least intrusive of  of the three Notified Pro plugins I’ve used thus far. I also think it’s the best one, and I highly recommend giving it a shot, since, like all the other plugins, it’s a free download on Cydia/Rock for Notified Pro owners.

By the way, "iPUSHtest" is a free app in the app store that lets you test this.
