Apple has issued a statement today indicating that future updates to the iPhone may end up ‘bricking’ your phone (rendering it inoperable / unuseable) if you have used an unlocking program on it. And there’s a firmware update due this week. Here’s what they had to say:
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week….
"Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.
This does not seem surprising to me. If you’ve unlocked your phone, I would imagine you’d be shying away from updates and just accepting the trade-off you make to use the phone on the carrier of your choice – unless and until somebody comes up with a way to unlock safely under the latest firmware release.
Hopefully, the Apple statement does not need to be a cause of great concern for those who have just ‘modded’ their iPhone – i.e. installed some 3rd party applications on it. It seems as if Apple are not going to go out of their way to break 3rd party apps with their updates, although of course they’re not going to bend over backwards to ensure they remain working either – that will be down to the app developers themselves.
What do you think? Planning to apply the next update when it comes out?
