iPhone: Usability Champ – Was That Rocket Science?

ComputerWorld has an article up featuring the results of a recent Usability Test, in which the iPhone was matched up against a Nokia N95 and an HTC Touch. The test was carried out by a leading usability consulting firm and was meant to determine whether the iPhone ‘lived up to its hype’ in this area.

Let’s cut to the bottom line: In terms of usability, iPhone blew away its two competitors. Its overall score in the usability tests was 4.6 out of 5. The HTC Touch was a distant second at 3.4, and the Nokia N95 scored 3.2.

Looks like it lived up to the hype, and then some. It blew the doors off the N95 and the Touch. Stunning result right? We needed a crack team of usability gurus to tell us there is now pretty much iPhone and then everyone else in this area? I think we all knew that from 5 minutes into Jobs’ Intro of the thing back at the beginning of this year.

Having said that, it is still kinda cool to see some tangible confirmation from experts in this field, and it’s interesting learning about how the test was conducted and seeing the scores for the three phones in each of several key areas.

I just don’t see any other phone / device that’s even going to give the iPhone a run for its money in this area right now. And since this test is all about usability and not functionality, the much-heralded TyTn 2 and other upcoming Windows Mobile devices are not going to match up either.

What do you all think?  Anything out there that could hold a candle to the iPhone?
