Ironic – NYT Gives iPhone Hacking a Rundown

This week, of all weeks  …  In the same week that the  iPHone Update 1.1.1 came out and (at least for now) killed off 3rd party applications on the iPHone, David Pogue at The New York Times released a video that will help homescreen1heighten awareness of what’s out there in Native Apps Land.

Not withstanding the obligatory disclaimer statements that are included in the video, the overall feel of it is that it’s an endorsement of 3rd party programs.

He offers a brief tour of the native apps experience on iPhone, and then shows off Installer and Summerboard (although it’s listed as ‘Sunburst’)  amongst others.

When talking about web apps being available, he mentions that there are certainly some good ones around, but goes on to sum up what lots of people feel:

"But that’s not what people want … People want full-blown programs that live on the phone."

So … pretty ironic having this video show up this week – but hopefully the fact that even the New York Times is full of praise for the work being done on 3rd party programs will help to give even more momentum to calls for Apple to open things up and support development on the iPhone.
