Wow. It’s been a long time since I looked at Bloglines properly. Today I noticed a post about a Bloglines Beta, and wondered whether there would be an iPhone version.
Well there is, and it’s very nice. In fact, Bloglines as a whole (on the desktop as well) looks much fresher and sharper than I recall it being when I started drifting away from it and using GoogleReader and NetVibes much more.
On the iPhone, the new beta looks superb. Some things to like about it:
- Good main nav screen
- Really nice layout for individual feeds and articles
- It has an ‘Email This’ link on each article which uses the iPhone email client, not a slow-loading web form – I *love* this feature and find it immensely useful
- Preferences settings specific to iPhone for showing tools (not sure exactly what these are as yet) and opening links in new window
Read on for a couple more screencaps and some more quick thoughts on what’s nice about Bloglines Beta on the desktop …
Here’s a single feed page (for a very cool feed) showing the Pin and Email This links bottom of each article:
And here’s the feeds list page (with setting to show only updated feeds, rather than all):
The desktop version of Bloglines Beta is looking very sharp too, and has added some nice new features. Easily my favorite new feature is the Start Page, a la NetVibes (and many others). This lets you drag and drop your favorite feeds onto the start page area (right hand pane in the overall Bloglines window) where you can move them around as widget-boxes. It’s a great way to be able to take in a whole lot of information on multiple feeds at a quick glance, as you can on NetVibes or a personalized Google home page.
I also like the ability to set your view preference for individual feeds. And the feed articles just look very sharp. The Bloglnes beta announcements give some details on their support for CSS and how it lets us ..
see the content as the publisher designed it.
Bloglines used to be my favorite (and only) RSS reader when I first discovered RSS, but for a while now I’ve primarily used NetVibes and GoogleReader (and NewsBreak on Windows Mobile devices). I’ve only just started using the new beta and getting to know it, but it feels like it may well make Bloglines a favorite for me again.
