iPhone Hacking – Terms Glossary at TUAW

Jailbreak. The iPhone and iPod touch hacks that allow users to gain access to the entire Unix filesystem. In Unix terms, this refers to changing the root of the directory tree to /.

Erica Sadun at TUAW has published an iPhone hacks vocabulary primer – a brief glossary of key terms being used when talking about hacking an iPhone.

It’s a pretty short guide, but should be very useful for anyone who is starting to think about making any modifications to their iPhone. If you’re at that point, but feel confused when people start throwing out words like ‘unlocking’ ‘jailbreaked’, or ‘ssh’, for example, then a quick read through the TUAW guide should give you a nice frame of reference.
