Nikotalkie – Just Talk, Don’t Type

Nikotalkie is like SMS without fumbling with the keyboard or worrying about typos …

Nikotalkie is a very neat new iPhone application that lets you send messages with little or no typing; instead you quickly record and send voice messages to your friends and colleagues.

Once you’ve signed up for a (free) account with Nikotalkie and installed tinbox_optionshe program, all you need to do to send a new message is select a user to send to (from your sent history) or add a new recipient and hit the big, green ‘Talk’ button. Once you’ve recorded your message, you can choose to review it, cancel it, or send it on its way.

Nikotalkie currently has a pretty basic Inbox (as shown on the right above) that shows your new and saved messages, along with the time they arrived – although the time is currently shown in GMT, with no option as yet to set your local time.

The sound quality on messages is surprisingly good, more than up to its task.

It is still in its early stages of development, but is being updated frequently and the latest version (released last night) is already beginning to add some pretty cool features – like a new messages indicator number on the application’s icon (a la email and SMS apps), an option to leave it running in the background, and settings for how often it refreshes in Edge or WiFi mode.

Another cool feature is that you can send a message to an email address – like your own for example – and get a nice .MP3 attachment with your voice note.

Its next release is expected within the next couple weeks, and quite a few major enhancements should be coming soon – such as:

  • address book sync + real buddylist
  • outbox
  • better archive (incl. Sync)
  • replacement of some network framework parts
  • stability, stability, stability
  • more intelligent time settings (like check more often during the day etc.)
  • individual notification sounds

Nikotalkie is a ‘definite keeper’ app for me and I’m looking forward to it getting better and better. It’s available on Installer, or you can go get more info at:
