A Non-Hacker’s Lament

I read Patrick’s piece on Nikotalkie late last night. It sounds like a service worth trying. More accurately, it MIGHT sound like a service worth trying if I COULD try it. Alas, I can’t. Installing it is not an option for me because it requires the ability to add third party applications– jail-breaking the phone– which is something I won’t do.

My refusal to hack my iPhone is not an ethical issue. No, it is purely practical. In the two months I have had my iPhone it has become my central data and communication device. It is my “goto gadget”, and its usefulness, and the degree to which jailcell1 I rely upon it, increases almost daily. (Like today when I read the Sunday New York Times mobile edition on it while drinking my morning coffee– an absolutely terrific user experience!!)

I rely upon the iPhone’s rock solid stability– a new experience for me having previously used devices that required constant rebooting. I depend upon its terrific battery life– the reason I do not long for 3g as much as I thought I would.

As much as I would like to be able to add some of the many terrific 3rd party applications I worry about the way they might impact its stability and battery life. Worse yet, I worry about bricking my iPhone entirely. If the iPhone had remained a secondary device for me this might not me a concern. But it is not a secondary device any more. As a result, I cannot bring myself to use it for beta testing, which is what hacking the iPhone is right now.

And it bums me out. It bums me out because the iPhone could become even more useful for me with the additional of some 3rd party applications. It bums me out because Apple has pulled so far ahead of its competition only to put on the brakes. It bums me out because, as a result, everyone loses.
