Automated 1.1.1 Jailbreak Method Due Any Moment?

Posted on 20 Oct 2007 by PatrickJ

We’ve now received word, however, that an automated method for jailbreaking and pushing Installer.app to 1.1.1 iPhones — akin to AppTapp for 1.0.2 iPhone — is on the way, and could make its debut as soon as this weekend.easybuttonhack

That’s from a recent post by Ben Wilson at iPhone Atlas, and sounds like very good news.

If you’ve been holding off on updating to iPhone firmware 1.1.1 because the existing methods looked a little long and / or scary, then it’s probably worth holding back and waiting for this sort of simple, one touch type routine to emerge.

Here’s hoping a quicky method arrives real soon …

Okay excuse my ignorance but I am really confused about what will happen if I update my iPhone to 1.1.1. My iPhone is on 1.0.2 and is jailbreaked using AppTap but is not unlocked (I am using AT&T)…

If I used iTunes to update to 1.1.1 what will happen? Will the phone be bricked? or will i just lose all the custom (native) apps? Will I lose all my contacts, SMS messages, etc? And if the update will work can I then just install installer.app using the instructions for 1.1.1?

No ignorance involved here – I think this whole subject is very confusing because of the speed of change and developments, especially since 1.1.1 came out. Anyway, some answers:
I updated to 1.1.1 from pretty much your situation (1.0.2 jailbreaked and apps added, but not unlocked) and had no issues. There have been people whose phones have been ‘bricked’ when updating to 1.1.1, but reports suggest that this has happened in pretty rare cases, and does not affect ‘modded’ iPhones any more than non-modded ones.
So … with any luck the update to 1.1.1 should be fine for you.
As for not losing contacts, SMS etc., you’ll want to sync before updating, ensure your contacts are good in whatever your desktop client is for them, and you may want to look at this thread for further backup guidance:

After you update, you’ll need to use one of the jailbreak methods to get your phone ready to install apps again. Depending on your OS, there are various options – iFuntastic for Mac, for example. If you’re on Windows, here’s a link to a guide done by Tinman which I’ve used and many others have successfully:

Actually it’s two guides, as there is a shorter method available now than when I did this.
Hope this helps a bit – let us know how it goes …

Thanks so much, this very helpful. At the moment I am downloading the 1.1.1 update but it appears to have surpassed 152.3 MB, so it just says (now) 189.2 of 152.3 MB and it keeps going up…. Has this happened to others? Will it eventually stop?

  4. patrick says:

You’re welcome. I think I do remember seeing others have that issue – think it just resolved itself, finished downloading …

  5. barmish says:

okay got that issue resolved,,, now I cannot “update” and I cannot “restore” i get the error:
“The iPhone “Barmish’s iPhone” could not be restored. An error occurred while reading from the device.”

Note: I am able to sync so my comp definately recognizes the iPhone…

Hey – I just noticed this one, thought I had seen all last night. Did you get past this and get updated?

  7. barmish says:

Was only able to get the update working on work computer (which it did)… Then followed all the instructions on my home computer… Worked great!! Thanks… Although… I preferred the old way which extra icons appeared (ie scrolling up down rather than pages of icons (left/right)… Oh well no big deal!

    Thanks, this blog ROCKS!

  8. patrick says:

barmish – great news! Glad it worked out for you. I think the horizontal scroll takes some getting used to, but in the end I like it better than before. Maybe it’ll grow on you too. Thanks for the kind words too!

  9. barmish says:

It’s not the horizontal scroll that I mind so much its just I find the ability to re-arrange the icons in Customize rather unintuitive…
