We’ve all been there. That moment when you’re on a call with a high profile client and that little tone breaks in to let you know that you’re about to run out of juice. Unfortunately, you know there’s no way that the 15% of battery you’ve got left is going to get you through the rest of this call. So what’s the plan? You run around with your head cut off looking for your sync/charge cable, then hope you can find an empty USB port in the back of your computer and pray that nobody notices you’re laying on the ground under your desk looking like a fool. Nothing like having a 3 foot cable running from your head to your computer. We are the coming of the Borg.
A low battery warning is the bain of any mobile user’s life and I’m here to tell you that there is a cure! You DON’T have to lay next to your computer anymore!
What is it?
The JAVOedge Portable Battery Charger is a 3400mAH charging system from JAVOedge that will connect to your device and provide it a much needed boost for those times when you just can’t hit your regular charger. The review unit supplied by JAVOedge is the “complete” bundle which includes all the available extras listed below. There is a more basic option which includes the charger and USB cable only as well as a starter kit with a couple extras.
What’s in the bag?
The charger itself comes with a handy carrying case which sort of reminded me of one of those shaving kit things you get when you buy a good rechargeable. Unfortunately the contents of this case aren’t going to do much for your looks.
Naturally in order to charge up the portable battery system you’re going to need some way to give it the juice. JAVOedge included both a wall charger and a car charger for just that purpose. Notice the standard sized USB cable port. No need to hunt down a custom cable to connect the charger to the source of said juice.
Along with the AC and car chargers you’ll find a standard USB A/B cable, a retractable charging cable with a female connector and the JAVOedge 3400mAH battery.
Finally you’ll also find “tips” that attach the the retractable cable for the Apple iPod/iPhone, Palm Treo, Sony PSP, Nokia phones, LG phones along with that standard Mini-USB for your HTC (and other) type devices.
Real Life Use (YMMV!)
Alright, so just telling you about this charger isn’t worth much of anything if I didn’t take some time and run it through real life use scenarios. So first thing I did was have my wife lose the wall charger for her Moto RAZR V3xx. Ok, I didn’t force her to lose it… but somehow the thing got unplugged from the wall and frickin walked away. No joke – it was there in the morning, gone in the afternoon and I DIDN’T TAKE IT!
So how did the JAVOedge charger do? How about 2 straight weeks? My wife carried the JAVOedge charger and cable with her (loose in her purse) for two weeks before she finally came back to me and said: “There’s something wrong with this thing.” My wife’s way of saying the little light on the front isn’t coming on any more so it’s probably out of juice. The two weeks of power was impressive, but even more impressive was that it bounced around in her purse for those two weeks and didn’t end up in multiple pieces. So, that leads me to say that the build quality is pretty good, definitely wife proof.
My iPhone (1400mAH) managed to run for about 3 days. On the first day I plugged the iPhone into the JAVOedge charger with the battery warning popping up during a call I was on. I spent another 15 minutes on the call with the charger connected then set the iPhone down and went to bed. When I got up about 6 hours later the iPhone was fully charged up and ready to roll. On the next charge the iPhone was well below the halfway mark, but not to the warning. Same thing on the third day, but I didn’t pay attention to if it got fully charged as I woke up late and did the whole grab my iPhone, wallet and keys thing like in the commercial. Not too shabby…
I also tried out my Palm Treo 750 and T-Mobile SDA. Both charged up as expected with not a hint of smoke! I also got a hold of a friend’s Sprint Mogul and T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard) which worked wonderfully.
Conclusion
The JAVOedge High Capacity (3400mAH) Portable Battery Charger COMPLETE Bundle is excellent. I couldn’t be happier with the ease of use, durability and the amount of power this little unit supplies. I expected the unit to be a lot bigger than it actually is, and was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package to find a charger not much thicker than my iPhone and a bit lighter to boot!
The only real complaint I can come up with on this charger bundle is that there isn’t a battery meter on the unit so you have no idea how much juice is left in it. I don’t know how much it would cost to add, but the charger would be near perfect with a little button that lit up a set of lights … like a laptop battery indicator.
Overall I don’t think you can go wrong with this charger. If you’re constantly on the go and need a portable power source this is your guy! If you’re not a world traveler but like me have a device that doesn’t let you swap batteries, then this is your guy! If you’re one of the three people who own a Microsoft Zune … this is NOT your guy as it isn’t supported. Sorry Zuners.
