Here’s one more very impressive set of numbers that emerged from Apple’s triumphant financial reporting yesterday:

Apple has sold 1.4 million iPhones in a little over a quarter. It took the iPod more than two years to reach the same number of sales.

The price cut is said to have helped boost the sales numbers recently, but even so – that seems an amazing little stat to me. The iPod is the case study for a mega-successful, company-transforming, world conquering consumer product – and the iPhone is flat out blowing it out of the water!

Once I saw the numbers quoted above I searched a little and found this timeline of some iPod history and milestones. It shows that iPods hit the 2 million sold mark at around two years after being launched. The iPhone is on pace to hit that same mark in 6 months! And it’s about to go from being sold in one country to four countries next month.
