New – iPhone Contacts Search & Call Application

Here’s a very useful looking new native iPhone application that’s popped up on Installer today.  It’s called Search and it does two things:

  • Searches your contacts as you type – and then dials a phone number with one tap once you select a contact
  • Lets you specify a date and then jump straight to it in the Calendar program

The search feature works well and fairly quickly. This should be a big hit with lots of people, and certainly for those with ultra-long lists of contacts. The date feature is one that I could take or leave really.

Search is tested on iPhone firmware 1.1.1, but may also work with 1.02:

This software is still beta, and has only been tested on 1.1.1 though it should work fine on 1.0.2 (we haven’t specifically tested it on 1.0.2)

One slight downside to this app at the moment – it has a ‘nagware’ reminder screen that you see on each launch of the program, asking for a donation.

Check out the Search application via Installer, or download it HERE.

I have 1.0.2 and it works great, going to donate to stop the pop up message. Is this the first native app with a license?

  2. patrick says:

@waynes – cool, good to hear it works well on 1.0.2 as well. I’m not sure whether it’s the first native app with a license – it is the first I’ve seen …

How do i get this search app on my iphone? Thanks Josh

joshua – you have to have ‘hacked’ your iPhone so that it is able to install 3rd party apps, as you probably already know. If you’ve done that and you have Installer.app on your iPhone, you’ll find the Seacrh app under the Utilities section. If you don’t have Installer for some reason, you can also go to the developer’s site for a dowload:
    http://www.polarbearfarm.com/About_PBF_%22Search%22.html
Inside the .zip file you’ll find the search.app folder – you’d need to manually copy that via WinSCP or Putty or similar into your /applications folder on the iPhone.
Installer is the easier way …

Can someone provide its URL for installer, i can’t seem to find the URL anywhere..thanks in advance

  7. patrick says:

admkhan – this app is published under the Ste Packaging source in Installer, so you should see it as long as your Community Sources are up to date. Look under All Packages.

Love this application. Finally one worth paying for (and paid for). I missed this feature on iPhone after coming from a Treo. Get it if you don’t have it. My only criticism is a delay when opening application. Hopefully it will respond faster in the future. (I used ZiPhone to jailbreak)

  9. patrick says:

carrjar – glad you’re liking it, and that’s cool that you;ve donated for the app as well!

I’m glad to have discovered this blog. Some questions: (1) Has anyone used this app on v1.1.4? (2) Does it search all fields in contacts (I often forget a name, but remember the person is a cheesemaker which I’ve entered in the notes or department field)?

  11. patrick says:

hjarman – We’re glad you discovered the site too :)
Answers = I use it on 1.1.4 and it works well, and I believe it does search all (or nearly all, not just most common) fields …
