Hi folks
In preparation for some upcoming travel I picked up the AV cable – a purchase with one and only one purpose in life “ watching video on something bigger than a 3.5 inch screen.
So here we go with a lightning review, something short and sweet… kinda like the cable itself
It is good.
It does what it says.
I’m glad I got it.
Okay… maybe a little more…
The iPhone’s 1.1.1 firmware update brought video out to the device. Unfortunately, unlike last generation’s video iPod, the iPhone, and both the iPod Touch and Classic require a specialized cable to view content on a television. At $49 the cable is a bit pricey but since I want the option to watch a movie or two on a television while traveling I picked one up.
In typical Apple fashion setup was simple and quick. I attached the cable to the back of my home television according to the instruction manual. I went into the iPod setting in the iPhone’s settings menu, and made sure it was set to NTSC for viewing in the United States. When I attached the cable to the bottom of the iPhone a menu appeared asking if I wanted to view content on the television. I selected “yes” and started a show I had transferred to the iPhone. The video on the iPhone was immediately displayed on the television as well.
While the sound was excellent, the picture quality was good but not great. In fairness however, I was viewing content intended for a 3.5 inch screen on a 42 inch one. I suspect the quality will be much better on a 20-26 inch screen. It certainly works and is a nice option to have if you are traveling.
Pros
- Setup is simple
- Works as expected
Cons
- Picture quality leaves something to be desired
- Expensive for what it is (but in fairness it also include a power adapter that costs $29 when purchased separately.)
