I’m the first to admit that I’m very protective when it comes to my Tech-Toys. On the other hand, I hate to see my gadget all wrapped up like a mummy. Yeah, I know it doesn’t make sense at all, or does it?
So, when I first got my hands on the Apple iPhone, one of my biggest dilemma wasn’t to Jailbreak or not, but rather how to keep my gadget in pristine condition. In fact, I spent another $30+ on a crystal case before I even left the Apple Store. Of course that’s $30+ wasted, as I no longer use it after just several days of use.
It’s always hard for me to find that balance between protection, and functionality when it comes to cases. Great example is the crystal case I got from the Apple store. It looks good, and it protects my iPhone like Fort Knox. That’s all good and dandy, but docking my iPhone with the crystal case is not possible. Of course, I could still sync it, I just can’t use the dock with the case on. I wouldn’t have mind it that much if I could just take off the case without resorting to using a screwdriver, hammer, pliers, and broken nails… Okay, maybe it’s wasn’t that bad, but believe me it was pretty frustrating.
So, now I’m back to square one, running around with my device with no protection. While it’s a great feeling doing it without protection, I just don’t want to risk it. Especially with a device that cost as much as the iPhone.

Like most of the Proporta cases, the iPhone series Alu-Leather comes with the unique aluminum “screen saver” system. Made of aircraft grade aluminum, this material can handle those everyday bumps and grinds without any problem. It is something that I personally benefited from on several occasions. I’m not sure what it is, but I’m like a magnet to anything that has corners. I did my share of bumping my device on the corner, and the “screen saver” feature of the Alu-Leather case really did its job. I can just imagine what the damage could’ve been if I didn’t have any protection.
Design / Functionality
The case includes a removable belt clip that can easily be attached/detached. It does add some bulk and weight, but comes in handy for those days when you are on the go.
While most of the belt clips that I’ve used before don’t stay on my belt when I bend over, this one does. It has very deep “C” clip design that doesn’t easily get loose. In fact it sometimes feels that it is too hard to come off. The clip is attached via the typical screw to the back of the case. It does come detached with a placeholder screw that you take out prior to attaching the clip. You will need a flathead screwdriver for this one.
The iPhone slips into the case over the top. Although, the iPhone slips into the case without any problem, I find myself hitting the power button at times while inserting the iPhone into the case. Nothing really major, but still something that you need to watch out for. This is something that usually happens when I’m in a hurry.
There’s a little clip that prevents the iPhone from slipping all the way. Its located on the left side where the speaker is located. It does block the speaker a bit, but not enough to change the sound that comes out of the speaker.
As its name suggests, the Alu-Leather case book style design opens up like a book. It works well if you want to keep the iPhone in its case while doing something on your device.
Proporta products have always struck me as excellent, and the iPhone Alu-Leather is no exception. The hand crafted elegant and contrast stitching compliments the iPhone beautifully. I’m not an expert when it comes to leather, but the Alu-Leather case feels and smells like top class leather to me.
While I’m sold on how beautiful the case is, I wasn’t sure how well it would stand up to my day to day activities. After many days of using the case, I am very happy to report that it does the job very well.
Conclusion
There’s no question that this case does it job when it comes to protecting your precious gadget. While it’s pretty standard for case manufacturers to use leather, Proporta rises above the competition with its unique aluminum “screen saver” design. The Proporta Alu-Leather case does come with some minor design flaws, but overall it does what it suppose to do. It’s tough not to fall in love with this case.
