AppSnapp – the ‘one-touch’ jailbreak method for iPhones running the current 1.1.1 firmware – has recently been updated, and is very impressive. It sure treated me right yesterday!
I had already used one of the earlier ’57 Touch’ methods to jailbreak while running 1.1.1, but I wanted to try out the AppSnapp method and decided a ‘refresh’ for the iPhone would be nice anyway.
For those who may be considering a similar refresh, here’s the steps I took to try to make this as painless as possible for me and the lovely iPhone:
- Synced with iTunes, so that I could get back my Favorites and all my other good stuff
- Did a Restore to get the iPhone back to a fresh or ‘virgin’ sort of 1.1.1 state
- Visited the jailbreakme.com site and ran AppSnapp
- Synced again to grab favorites / contacts etc back
Some quick impressions of the process, along with the results of it:
AppSnapp was successful first time (over a WiFi connection), was very fast, and even kept me nicely updated with status messages as to what it was up to (e.g. patching the infamous TIFF vulnerability in Safari towards the end of the process).
The only things I lost as a result of this refresh, were SMS messages, which was no problem (I know there’s a Mac backup util for these, but I run Windows) and phone favorites (like the wife as a quick dial favorite) which I use lightly and was able to recreate in around 5 minutes.
Overall, painless and worthwhile – just as I hoped it would be …
