Keep your iPhone contacts in sync wirelessly
Funambol – the open source mobile messaging service – now offers full over-the-air contacts sync for the iPhone, for free. And you can use Funambol as a full, native application, or as a web application through the Safari browser if you don’t want to jailbreak your iPhone.
So you can add new contacts when you’re out and about and sync them up instantly, without having to mess with cables and plugging into your Mac or Windows PC. Or you could restore all of your contacts over the air if needed.
In order to make use of Funambol, you need to create an account
(for free) at the myFUNAMBOL portal – which is officially in beta, like everything these days. Then you’re off and running – you can download an Outlook plugin if you want to grab all your contacts from there to populate your list quickly, or just sync immediately from your iPhone by visiting the myFUNAMBOL iPhone site at http://my.funambol.com/iphone. You can add, edit, or delete contacts from the web portal via the iPhone or your desktop PC.
I’ve tried out the Outlook plugin, as well as the iPhone web app and native application. They’ve all been quick to setup and easy to use. Now what I’m really looking forward to is when they add the ability to sync calendar, tasks, and notes – which are due to be coming soon (probably after Apple makes the SDK available early next year).
And just in case you’re curious about the Funambol name, like I was, it means tightrope walker – and is all about being strong, vigilant, nimble, adapting to market conditions etc. See HERE if you want the full background on the name.
Otherwise, just give the myFunambol portal a look at:
