A look at a few top-notch sites for iPhone sports addicts
I’m a big-time sports fan – NFL, college football and hoops, baseball, soccer and just about anything else except NHL and synchronized swimming. So I’ve been checking out quite a few sports sites on the iPhone, and seeing which ones are worth bookmarking and visiting often.
I’ve been surprised at how few I’ve found that I really like so far, how few work really well on the iPhone screen and make me
want to keep going back to them. So, this is not a Top Ten list, because I haven’t found 10 that I’d really recommend as yet.
But – these few that I have found are excellent and worth visiting A LOT:
ESPN Pod Center – the home for podcasts for many of the most popular ESPN shows – Pardon The Interruption, Best of Mike & Mike, Around The Horn, Football Today, NBA Dish, and more. There are about 2 weeks worth of each show’s podcasts, refreshed daily. PTI in particular is a real favorite of mine and as I very rarely catch the TV show, this is the perfect way to enjoy it much more often. The site is formatted to fit perfectly on the iPhone screen, and offers easy navigation – it’s just 3 taps to select a show, pick which day’s episode you want to hear, and fire it up.

Sports Tap – I’ve posted on this one before, as it is my favorite site for quick scores and stats / standings on the iPhone. It offers not just scores, but some stats and standings that are easy to get to. With Sports Tap it’s very quick and easy to move around and check up on several major US sports. All its pages are very well done, and very little scrolling is required to see all you need to see.
UEFA’s European Football Vodcast – Another compilation type site, for video casts covering the Champions League, UEFA Cup, the European Championship. Like the ESPN Pod Center, this site makes it quick and easy to catch up with top football news from Europe.
Plusmo NFL – Plusmo provides a couple of sites – one for the NFL, and one for College Football. The NFL site in particular provides a great amount of very nicely presented information. It gives you live scores as Sunday rolls on, but also lets you choose a team and get full details on their schedule so far as well as what’s upcoming, and a very good section on team news – injuries and all the latest stories.

The one thing all these sites have in common is that their layouts are simple and super-easy to navigate. If you’re out and about and need your quick sports fix, or you *have* to know the score of a crucial game, these sites will serve up the info fast.
I’m sure there are lots of other great iPhone optimized sports sites out there – I just haven’t come across them yet. So … let me know what you think of these if you get a chance to try them, and tell me about some other great ones that I haven’t discovered yet …
