iPhone Matters has an interesting piece entitled, “How To: Install AFP On Your iPhone, Mount As Removable Disk“.
Using the iPhone as a removable disk sounds enticing, although with just 8gb of memory (minus the multiple megs the OS uses before you even start) I’m not sure how much free memory I really have to spare. As I read the piece, though, one thought kept coming back to me– “I don’t want to go back to the days of Windows Mobile…”
What I mean is this– I’m not happy Apple is making us wait until January at the earliest until opening up the platform. And even when they do, they will continue to play “Big Brother” and tightly control what gets approved and what doesn’t. But one of the night and day differences between my iPhone and Windows Mobile days is the stability factor.
No matter what the form factor my Windows Mobile devices, and I had many, all shared one thing in common– having to reset them after a freeze was a daily occurence. Between the instability of the platform and the unpredictable interplay between some of the many 3rd party apps I used, I was pulling out the battery and restarting far more often than I care to remember.
My iPhone, on the other hand, hasn’t frozen once. Yes, I am lacking a few things I would like such as voice dialing, but it is a reasonable trade-off for me. The stability of the iPhone alone makes it the best device I have ever used. And I’m not sure the degree of hacking some of these enhanced uses require is really worth the risk.
How about you?
