USA Users Can Drop Edge From Data Plan, Save $20 / Month?

A new option has appeared on the AT&T Wireless site, which allows you to remove the Edge data plan, and potentially save $20 per month by doing so.

If you go for it and remove the Edge data part of your plan, you should know that you lose not only the ability to access data on EDGE with Safari, Mail, and any other app that requires network access, but also the ability to use Visual Voicemail (you can still access your voicemail in a more conventional fashion of dialing in and entering your passcode).

It’s also not 100% clear right now whether you may end up getting charged (exorbitantly high) ad-hoc data use charges if your iPhone tries to use Edge in the background even with the plan turned off.  It’s certainly not unheard of for a carrier to pitch you a plan option that appears to work in your favor, and then stings you severely when you see your monthly bills.

Personally, I’d rather stick with Edge as a ‘better than nothing’ option anyway – things like checking email or browsing lighter sites – checking news on Google Reader for example – works ok and is not too frustrating on Edge – certainly better than being fully offline.

In order to remove the data plan, login to your account on AT&T Wireless, choose “Rate Plan & Features” and then “Add/Manage Features.” Scroll down and look for the section shown above and an option to “Select to Remove.”
