Apple Spying on Stocks & Weather App Usage, And There’s Already a Way To Stop It

Lots of coverage today on how it’s been discovered that Apple is tracking personal usage data for the Stocks and Weather apps on the iPhone – by sending your IMEI (a unique handset identifier number) along with data on your use of the two apps.

Some people will think this is not big deal, but others will find the very principal of this very disturbing (even though we’ve apparently consented to this via the iPhone’s End User License Agreement).  I don’t even use these two programs, but I still feel uneasy about this sort of data collection.  Privacy concerns everywhere you look these days I guess.

So it’s nice to see that Nate True has already come up with a command-line utility that strips out the IMEI text and still allows the Weather and Stocks applications to function.  His iPhone Privacy Patcher scans for the URL that the app uses to talk to Apple, and zeroes out the part where it includes your IMEI.
