A Canadian market analyst group says that the iPhone has already caused enormous price drops on Canadian wireless carriers’ data plans – even before it is available in Canada. Examples given include a 1gb plan that has come down from $2300 Canadian per month to $100 Canadian since June! That
‘s just huge.
Iain Grant at Seaboard Group says the price drops have been "breathtaking":
Apple is squeezing carriers to chop their data rates to boost demand for its handset (or in Grant’s words, to make "plans that aren’t ridiculous,") which has led to speculation that the reason iPhones aren’t sold here is Rogers’ reluctance to fall in line.
I’d always heard that data rates in Canada were on the silly side, but some of the numbers and the sudden drops in the rates are just crazy – and ‘less ridiculous’ plans should make the iPhone’s arrival twice as nice when it finally gets there …
