3G iPhone Next Year – Will You Upgrade?

We all knew that a 3G iPhone had to be on the cards sometime, and now it looks as if AT&T’s CEO has confirmed that a 3G model will be available next year.

"You’ll have it next year," he said, explaining that he was unaware of how much more the new version will cost than the existing $399 model because Apple chief executive Steve Jobs "will dictate what the price of the phone is.”

No word yet on when next year we should expect to see a speedier iPhone.  The holdup has always been blamed on Apple needing to find w ays to get to an acceptable trade-off of less battery life vs. faster connectivity.

As far as that trade-off goes, I would be willing to settle for just mediocre (or even slightly bad) battery life if it helped get me 3G speeds.  I’d happily cope with finding a decent portable charging solution and the slight hassle of using it, if I knew I could nearly always work online much more quickly.

So … I would also be very keen to trade up to a 3G iPhone just about as soon as it’s available. I would hope and expect that there should not be a major premium for a 3G model, as it’s hardly a brand new or unique feature.

How about you all – would a 3G model have you looking to upgrade immediately?  What are your thoughts on battery life and price points that would make the 3G iPhone a must-have?
