Okay, sorry, maybe a little misleading, but thanks to iGet Mobile I can now access almost my entire iMac hard drive no matter where I am so long as I have a data connection. It really DOES turn my iPhone into a 258gb device. But I am getting ahead of myself…
Every now and then I download a software demo and am so taken by it that I shell out my hard earned dinero on the spot. That is what h
appened when I downloaded iGet Mobile from Nakahara Informatics last week. I tried it and just two hours later they had my $39. Why? Because iGet Mobile gives me access to almost anything on my desktop and IT JUST WORKS!
Back in my Windows days I tried GoToMyPc and LogMeIn. Both did exactly what they said and both worked really well. A key advantage with iGet Mobile, however, is that the interface is optimized for the iPhone (or the iTouch) and it works well over both WiFi and Edge. And… when the company talks about a 60 second learning curve they mean it. I installed the program, created a user name and a really strong password (after all I am giving access to my desktop), opened the site on my iPhone and, once I put in my user name and (really strong) password, I could see all the files on my desktop. I then put all the .pdf files I might need as resource material (there are a lot) into a new folder on the desktop entitled "Quick Access". I now have an entire library of material available to me through my iPhone at a moment’s notice.
You can view the document directly, convert it to a PDF for viewing through Safari or even email it to yourself. So long as the file is supported (documents created and saved in Pages do not) it will be accessible within moments.
Let me give one scenario when this would have been great– a few weeks back I wrote a talk I needed to be giving later that day. I worked on it for hours and then emailed it to myself, or so I thought. It had been a really long week and I somehow ran out without the hard copy I had printed. "No problem" I thought, "I’ll just reprint it from the email I sent myself." Big problem!!– the email never went through. Fortunately my wife was home and was able to email it to me a few minutes later.
Now look at the scenario with iGet. I realize I don’t have the document, I take out my iPhone and I open Safari. The only decision I have to make is- do I want to email the document to myself or just read it on the iPhone.
There are limitations. As far as I have found, there is no access to media or information with drm protection. This isn’t a program to increase the entertainment aspect of the iPhone. It IS, however, a great way to remotely access documents, PDFs or other data you might want with you throughout the day.
It is a great program and is worth a look. Oh, and it is currently Mac only.
