The list of traditional ‘old media’ news sites that are bringing out iPhone optimized versions is growing pretty quickly, and all those iPhone browser share numbers are sure to increase this trend too.

CBS News is the latest new entry, as their iPhone specific site has just recently launched.cbsnews1

It’s probably just me, but this one gives me a little bit of  a ‘Why did you bother?‘ sort of vibe.  The site’s main home page and the pages for top-level news area sections are laid out in a very, very basic way – they look like the 0.1 release of some of the more basic apps you find in Installer.

Also, the pages for individual news items look OK, but have no action links to email the story or comment on it, contact the author etc.  You also cannot navigate back to the main home page from a news article page – you have to first go back to the section the story is in (Politics or whichever) and then get back home.  These sort of things just seem like nobody really thought through basics of navigation and how people might use the site.

Oh, and no Sports section among the main topic headings – sacrilege 🙂
