iSpit is a new application from the guys at Robota Softwarehouse – who brought us the excellent Screenshot and SysInfo programs. iSpit (what a great name!) is a ‘fast and tiny’ http server for the iPhone – so you can serve up files on your iPhone as pages for viewing / downloading in any browser.
I’ve had a quick play with iSpit today and it works as advertised, a
nd quite nicely. It took around 2 minutes to install it, turn it on, and successfully test it and start browsing files on the iPhone from my desktop browser.
As Robota point out on their product page for iSpit, there are other ‘heavyweight’ solutions in this area, like Apache – but their goal is to provide a much lighter and easier to use option. iSpit achieves that goal and follows the lead of all the Robota iPhone apps released so far – in that it is very simple to work with and provides some great functionality.
Once you’ve installed iSpit, you simply toggle its ‘Enabled’ setting in order to turn it On and Off. It lets you go with the default of Port 80 or choose a lesser known port for its operation. It also very kindly shows you what your iPhone’s current ‘Server Address’ is. This is important, as this is what you need to type into the address bar of your browser in order to browse the iPhone once iSpit is running. Just another user-friendly touch that’s quite helpful.
You can install iSpit via Installer, or read more about it and download it at Robota’s product page for it:
