Stitcher Radio is a new iPhone optimized site that provides a sort of audio news aggregator. The name is a little misleading, since there are no radio stations to stream audio – but there are collections of news podcasts and similar, sectioned off by category for easy navigation.
When you go to the Wall Street and Business section, for example, and hit play, you get a series of audio segments from various sources within this subject area. This works nicely. You just tell it to play once, and it cycles through its various sources under this category for you – so you only hit play once, and then listen to 5 minutes of WSJ headline coverage, then CNN Finance reports, and several others.
The idea with Stitcher is that they “stitch” together personalized, always-current stations that you can easily listen to on your iPhone or computer. Coming soon is the ability to customize what you want to hear and create your own personal station. You can already submit feedback on other items you’d like to hear, via links at the bottom of news se
ctions on the site.
For now, the range of topic areas is not huge (you can see most of the top-level sections in the first screenshot top left here) – and I’m really not sure why GigaOm merits a category all to itself. There are already quite a few leading news sources included from a good variety of areas though – from The Onion news, to the Wall Street Journal and CNN, and more.
Stitcher seems like a great idea to me, as long as they can expand their range of content to cover a much broader range of topics and news sources. Sports and Science / Tech are two that I’d like to see straight away.
Stitcher’s concept should have a lot of time-saving potential, and offer a very convenient solution if it is developed as planned. If they expand this out, it should work very nicely – as this is a much simpler way to roll together your favorite topic areas and get a good rundown on what’s happening, without having to keep up with a whole bunch of individual podcasts and keep current with their episodes etc. Definitely a new favorite for me.
