How-To: Setup Jott As Your On-The-Go Note-taker

joott setup 1

As I’ve written here on numerous occasions I’m a huge fan of both Jott and Remember the Milk.  Both work remarkably well, are relatively easy to set up and use, and are easy on the wallet — with Jott being free and the Pro version of Remember the Milk (needed for optimal iPhone integration) costing a grand total of $25.  Regardless of the technology you use I highly recommend both.  Where both Jott and Remember the Milk shine however is in their usefulness with an iPhone and the way in which they interact with each other to create and manage tasks.

While setting them up individually, and helping them play nicely with each other, is relatively straightforward, it does take a few steps.  To turn “easy” into “even easier”–This three part “how to” will provide a visual walk-through of how to get things going.

The first part, “Setting up Jott as your “on the go notetaker” is posted below.

The second part, “Setting up a Remember the Milk account and leveraging its excellent iPhone interface” will be posted later in the week.

And the third part, “Integrating Jott and Remember the Milk for use with iPhone for task creation and management will follow shortly thereafter.

Setting up JOTT as your “on the go notetaker”- a Step By Step How To

Without a doubt one of, if not the, most revolutionary services to appear in recent memory is Jott.com. And that ain’t no hyperbole– Jott is that amazing!!! If the iPhone brought “touch” to the mainstream Jott reminds us that while “touch” is great, nothing is easier, more convenient, and more powerful than “voice” and nothing leverages voice as effectively and flexibly as Jott.

Setting up Jott is rather straight forward…

Go to Jott.com, provide the required information and follow the step by step instructions. In all it takes only 4 short steps to set up and activate an account with Jott.

“Jotting”

Once your account is activated you can immediately begin to send yourself Jotts by calling the toll free number from the phone registered to your account immediately.  JottGäó - Registration6

It is as simple as ..

Call 1-866-JOTT-123

When prompted “Who do you want to Jott?” say, “Me” or “Myself”

Listen for the beep

Speak slowly and clearly for up to 30 seconds

Hang up.

Wait a minute or so for your Jott to magically appear.

Receiving Jotts by email…

Every Jott you create will appear under the “My Jotts” tab on the dashboard. However, you can also receive copies of Jotts via email or sms or send them to others by tajott set email king a few simple steps.

Go into “Settings”, then “My Emails”. The email address you used to sign up is automatically set as your primary contact. If you would like every Jott you create to be emailed to you check the box below “When you create a Jott, send it to:”. If you would like to add additional email addresses simply add them to the field, “Add Address”. You can then identify that email address as the one to which Jott should forward new notes.

Receiving Jotts by sms…

Go into “Settings”, then “My Phones”. Add additional phones using the “Add Number” field then identify any number you wish to receive new Jotts beneath “If you would like to receive a text message for every Jott you create, send it to:”

Sending Jotts to others…

Go to “Contacts” and follow prompts to add any contact to whom you may want to send a Jott. You can provide an email address, an sms number or both. They will receive an invitation to use JotJott add contacts to jott t with you. Once they do when asked “Who do you want to Jott?” say their name and then follow the same steps you would to send yourself a note.

While Jott’s recognition of both names and spoken messages is eerily accurate,  I recommend using specific and unusual names for each contact and spelling it phonetically in the “Sounds like” field in order to to insure that the right individual receives new Jotts.

The final step is to add Jott’s toll free number to your iPhone favorites.

See, didn’t I say it was easy!

BUT… and this is a big “BUT” while this sets Jott up as your “on-the-go” note taker it only scratches the surface of Jott’s usability. Once you get comfortable using Jott’s basic features it is time to begin using its powerful integration with other services.

Integration with other applications and services–

And what services they are. Twitter, Blogger, Remember the Milk and Google calendar are just a few examples of this. for this entry let me describe the use of Jott with Google Calendar, the newJott igoogleest tool to the Jott arsenal and it is amazing.

Under the “Jott Links” tab click the “add to Google” button next to Google Calendar icon. It will ask for verification of the service and whether or not you want to receive sms confirmations for new events. Once you grant access it will ask you which Google calendar you would like to use (assuming you use more than one). That’s it. Now when asked “Who would you like to Jott?” say “Google Calendar”. Following the beep say the day, the time and then the event. That is it. Within moments a new event will appear on you calendar and you will receive and sms confirmation of it.

I truly believe that once you try Jott you will wonder what you did without it.
