"When Haters Become Lovers"

It is a remarkable turn of events that I am now blogging about life with an iPhone. While I have long loved gadgets I had no interest in the iPhone when it was first announced. In fact, it wasn ‘t mere disinterest “ it was well, perhaps this email I sent to a friend a few months ago best captures it

‘This morning ‘s query (bearing in mind that the dog woke me at 4:30am wanting to play) ” why am I so disinterested in the iPhone? Is it-

a- I am not a fan of Steve Jobs

b- I am not a fan Apple ‘s products

c- I don ‘t like companies telling me what I can and can ‘t put on my device- Lemmings are only good with a honey barbecue dipping sauce ‘

Things changed in August after I spent a few minutes playing with an iPhone at my local AT&T store. By the time I walked out I had become one of the growing number of converts. But that was just the beginning. My iPhone led to the purchase of an iMac and an iPod classic. And yes, while I ribbed my friend Dimitri for standing in line to get one of the first iPhones I will be right there with him when (if??) the new ultralight MacBook appears in January.

Yes, I am now a proud, card-carrying lemming “ and I can ‘t wait to see what treats are in store at MacWorld.

But as bad as I was . my friend Jamie was even worse. Her email to me shortly before the iPhone was released read

‘iPhone ” NEVER.I ‘ve always hated not only how restrictive their products are, but there ‘s something about the smug, cult-like earnestness of the true fanatics that I find to be really annoying.  (And later) I totally cannot imagine giving up Windows Mobile at this point. ‘

When I emailed Jamie in August and told her I had just made, ‘the best tech purchase ever ‘ she responded in the most understanding of ways “her email went like this ”

‘TRAITOR!! Why why why???? Well, I hope you ‘re enjoying that fabulous Edge browsing experience. The (expletive) device simply will not work in my universe. I abhor DRM and won ‘t go near iTunes “ that ‘s just the beginning of my issues, oh yeah.. .and I love 3g oh yeah.. and I hate Macs. ‘

In the months since I have continued to be the recipient of her ‘abuse ‘  until, that is, yesterday   yes, yesterday my friend Jamie emailed me from her shiny new iPhone.

And it gets worse because sometime in the near future she ‘s even getting a Mac.

When it comes to the iPhone it seems that even the haters can ‘t help but eventually become lovers, or at least be headed in that direction.
