I was at the funeral for a man who lived to be almost 100 and had all his faculties until the very end. An amazing achievement in and of itself and, as a result, quite touching.
It was a cold and windy day here in the North East and, as is often the case, it seemed colder and windier at the cemetery. I didn’t wear gloves and boy oh boy were my fingers cold when I finally got back in the car. I went to call my wife (somehow death at any age reminds you to tell the people you love that you love them). I picked up my phone, pushed the button and then “slid to unlock” the way I have thousands of times in the past six months. Nothing happened. I swiped my finger to unlock it again. Nothing happened. I swiped my finger again. Nothing. And again and again.
I turned on the car’s heater and put my hand in front of the vent. Sufficiently thawed, I picked up my phone, pressed the button and “slid to unlock”. It worked this time and I made my call.
I don’t know what to make of it except that for the first time in six months I missed having physical buttons just a bit.
Moral of this story- wear gloves or move to the tropics.
