Just a few days ago, I rubbished Yahoo’s mobile site that we were re-directed to on the iPhone – in fact, christened it the first ‘winner’ of an ‘iPhone Sites That Suck’ category listing. Well, maybe Yahoo wasn’t paying much attention to that version of their site just lately, because now there is a brand new Yahoo Mobile beta site up, and it looks much, much better.
Yahoo has launched this new mobile site with a good amount of fanfare at CES today, and it looks like maybe it’s worth the hype so far.
Here’s some of what I liked about the new Yahoo Mobile right away:
- Prettier – It looks much less drab than before – big buttons, lots mote use of color on the pages, just crisper looking all the way round.
- Navigation is tons better, with easy top-of-every-page links to Home, and Search, and your ‘My Widgets’ page
– and easier navigation at just about every page I visited. - Widgets and Snippets and Quick Links – we like widgets! – and there are a good few to choose from already – though mostly Yahoo’s own stuff so far – I would hope and expect that this will get expanded real quick. Snippets and quick links I haven’t trolled though that much yet, but I have already added weather for Austin, news, and Yahoo local.
- Good Start Page – this is now a very worthy start page contender on the iPhone – as it’s easy to see your Yahoo mail and messenger services, a search bar, latest news, and whichever widgets and things you add to your home page. It looks prettier and maybe better than Google’s offering for mobile now.
Admittedly I’ve only played around with Yahoo Mobile beta for a fairly short while today, but it feels very nice to work with. Here’s a couple more screencaps:
