Satellite Radio Had Better Siriusly Watch Out

There’s a new over-the-air music service for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch that could quickly become a challenge for subscription-based radio services. FlyTunes1The soon-to-be released FlyTunes will offer thousands of channels of digital music over both WiFi and edge.Assuming it works as promised (it will be released by the end of the month) FlyTunes comes with some significant advantages over satellite radio – it:

  • doesn’t require additional hardware purchase, works with the iPhone already in your pocket.
  • offers a huge catalogue of stations
  • works everywhere there is any data connection (read – in buildings!!!!)
  • allows a tremendous amount of individual customization – mark some songs or artists as favorites and other as “if I never hear that song again it will be too soon”
  • doesn’t require a monthly subscription fee
  • allows users to cache music thereby reducing battery drain

FlyTunes CEO Sam Abadir notes:“FlyTunes bridges the massive disconnect that exists between the hundreds of millions of cell phones and portable media players people already own, and thousands of Internet radio stations that broadcast every type of music they could want from the user’s perspective, FlyTunes provides an extremely easy-to-use service that allows them to quickly get the music they want and to discover new music. Because FlyTunes uniquely sits between the broadcasters and the listener, it offers users personalized music, which has never been possible for satellite or terrestrial broadcasters, and the ability to cache hours of music for offline listening.”FlyTunes works with Macintosh or PC computers, and will be released as a free download on January 21, 2008 at the FlyTunes.fm web site. FlyTunes works with all Apple iPods, including the iPhone, and iPod Touch, Microsoft Zune, and all other popular media players supporting MP3 files, as well as multimedia-enabled cell phones.Unless you absolutely positively need your Howard fix each morning, FlyTunes is worth a look!!Look for a review on the 21st or soon after …
