100,000 Free (Ad-supported) WiFi Spots for iPhone Users

JiWire – who have provided an iPhone optimized WiFi finder page for quite some time – have announced today that members of their aJiWire1dvertising network are offering iPhone and iPod Touch users the option to connect to Wi-Fi networks for free in exchange for viewing a JiWire-supplied advertisement.

The option will be available at select Wi-Fi hotspots located in airports, hotels, cafes, and other desirable locations around the world. Major airpo rts include Atlanta-Hartsfield, JFK and LaGuardia in New York and Chicago’s O’Hare. Members of the JiWire Wi-Fi Advertising Network collectively operate more than 100,000 hotspots.

That’s a very cool initiative, especially while we’re still 3G-less on the iPhone.  I haven’t quite figured out yet how to distinguish between free hotspots that were already in the directory, and new ones added via the new advertising network (I’m at home right now, so not going to be able to test and see if an ad shows up), but hey – any extra free WiFi is always a good thing, and JiWire’s iPhone interface is pretty simple and slick too!

Cool – that’s our first comment with somebody making use of that new feature! I’m sticking to my jailbroken beauty at the moment, but I do love a couple of the new features.
