There are a large number of reports – on TUAW and on the AT&T Apple forums – that the latest iPhone 1.1.3 firmware update is leaving GoPhone users stranded in terms of their Edge data plans.
Apparently, lots of GoPhone users – in various different US regions – are getting errors along the lines of Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE when trying to connect. The really bad news is that so far all the reports on the AT&T forums, of having talked with AT&T and Apple Support on this issue, are stating that AT&T’s only ‘fix’ is to offer that users should switch to a standard monthly plan, or agree to be charged the (outrageously high) costs per kilobyte of data used – and possibly / supposedly then being reimbursed by AT&T at some point by calling in to their support again.
I’m on a Pay-As-You-Go plan, but I’ve not yet updated to 1.1.3 so I have not been able to test this at all. I have been thinking of switching to a monthly plan, but I don’t like the idea of being forced into it – and think it sounds more than a bit stupid to be forced into it because a firmware update ‘breaks’ it. Hopefully AT&T will come up with some different answers soon, though I guess I’m not holding my breath for that.
