From the ‘He’s Got It So Right– I Wish I Had Written It’ Files …

Right after the release of the iPhone’s new firmware 1.1.3 on Tuesday, technology author Farhad Manjoo observed what we all nojanupdatepic2w know to be true– “the iPhone keeps getting better“.

As I have observed previously, the most remarkable thing abou t the iPhone for me is that it is the first device I can remember that I like as much or more now as I did when I first got it half a year ago. Manjoo speaks for many of us when he writes,

Six months after you purchase most any other consumer electronics device, it begins to look obsolete compared to the competition. In contrast, the iPhone you bought last June is actually better now than it was back then.”

Yep- This week I have been amazed by the location finder added to the mapping program. The iPhone suddenly is a fully functioning GPS (minus the annoying but useful electronic “Turn left 200 feet ahead”). And more than once this week I said to my wife, “You’ve got to see this…”- something she is used to humoring me about when I get new devices but NEVER with something I have had for more than a few weeks. My iPhone is better and more useful now than it was when I got it in August and I marvel at it now as much as when it was new.

The reason, as Manjoo observes is that, “the iPhone is mainly software and as long as Apple keeps improving the software — which Jobs suggested it will, and for free — your device will stay on the cutting edge.” That in itself is revolutionary.

Yes, a day will come when Apple slows and finally ends its updates for iPhone Gen1, but we aren’t even close to that. When the SDK is released in a few weeks and Apple approved 3rd party programs start to appear it will be as if the iPhone were just released. Not bad for a device that many naysayers initially dismissed as a trendy fashion phone. (Oooops, I forgot, last January I was one of them…)
