iPhone 1.1.3 Jailbroken … but you can’t have it.

Let me say this right now. The iPhone SDK isn’t coming fast enough.

Not because of a jailbreak possibly being released at that time, but because then this whole jailbreak thing might actually not matter anymore.  I definitely respect the dev-team/elite team for all they’ve done for the iPhone over the past months, but this is getting ridiculous.

Remember when the iPhone would be near getting jail broken and the Internet would light up with people talking about it and the dev teams working night and day to make it user-installable? Remember when the only thing that mattered was getting the jailbreak in the hands of the people?

I remember idling in a particular set of IRC channels for a couple days watching as the TIFF exploit was being worked out. I remember when the announcement came out that it had been done and a couple folks only mustered an hour or two of sleep before getting up to go to work. All of this just to try and get the thing done and get it out in the hands of the users.

Now … the iPhone 1.1.3 update has been jailbroken, but they’re not going to release it until the SDK comes out. WTF IS THAT CRAP?

bullshit (source)

That’s my opinion. You can gloss this over as whatever you want – "We’re protecting the jailbreak from Apple" – bullshit. Apple’s going to fix the problem. Like it or not. I’d even be willing to bet they know how you jailbroke it. Unless you folks working on it grew up together and can prove 100% nobody would tell Apple … they know already. Money does interesting things and if its an open group of folks that were working on it – good chance someone is on the payroll. You don’t get to the point where your stock value is more than that of IBM or Dell without having some hands in various cookie jars.

"It’s their jailbreak … they can do whatever they want with it". – true. But still bullshit. Why would you announce it … and then tell people you won’t give it to them? The only people who do that are mean spirited, arrogant asses. Sorry, but that’s not the dev teams I’ve seen working on the iPhone prior to this!! They may be arrogant at times, and sometimes cranky when people ask n00b questions at 3am, but never have they been mean spirited or they wouldn’t be trying. And it’s not just theirs. Keep reading.

"They have your best interests in mind". Bullshit. My best interest (and according to the poll the interest of many others) is to have the jailbreak released. Many of these folks have donated money to the dev team for specifically this reason. They want someone who has the skills to do it working on creating jailbreak. Be dammed if Apple fixes it next month … they donate to get a jailbreak, not a jailbreak that some devs get to use but the donating people don’t. Again, I respect the folks who do this stuff – lord knows I don’t have the skills, but people donate to them for that reason. It’s not just their jailbreak… people have given their hard earned money to see this stuff happen. Its not their job to tell us what’s in our best interests. People have donated money to get a jailbreak… not a Roman senate.

"Get a contract with AT&T and quit your bitching" … this one was just flat out dumb. The jailbreak has nothing to do with a contract. I want a jailbreak. I have an AT&T contract. So what should I do now? I want a jailbreak because there are some apps out there that I like having native instead of web based. Doesn’t matter if I have a Rogers account, an O2 account, or a China Mobile contract … I want some of the native apps.

"Then you’re stupid for updating". Guilty. I’m a gadget junky. I love new things. I couldn’t help myself. DUH. I own a bloody iPhone. But I also really wanted the Google Maps update. Next to email and the phone – Maps is my #1 used application and the locate and route feature was just too good to pass up. Jailbreak or not … Maps is #1. I made a conscious decision to update. My bad. And I deserve what I got.

According to iPhone Atlas the jailbreak requires a hardware mod. If that’s the case then fine. I can see not releasing it if that’s the case simply because at that point there’s a great risk of someone (like me) getting in there and hoarking up the hardware. I’d rather see them keep working on an easier way if that’s the case. But for almost any other reason aside from hardware mods or spit and polish … the dev team needs to rethink this decision.

Alright – There’s my 2 pennies. Where’s yours? Am I way off base here?
