Clipit – iPhone App Creates Custom Web Clips for Phone Numbers and More …

Erica Sadun’s new Clipit utility lets you create custom web clips on your home screens, quickly and easily via a GUI. It can be used to create web clips using http:// URLs, as well as itms:// and, possibly the most popular usage, the tel:// ones for use in adding frequently used phone number shortcuts to the home screen.

Here’s how the telephone link items work:

If you’re looking to create a telephone link, build a URL that starts with tel://, e.g. tel://202-456-1111. When tapped, the web clip first opens Safari, which then asks you to confirm whether you want to continue placing the call.

If you have typo in a web clip, there’s no way to edit them right now, so just delete your mistyped entry and create it again.

This is another of the ‘TUAW Responds’ series – in response to a reader who wanted "web clips on his iPhone that "prefix my web path with a username and password, great for things like web based corporate email".  I’m not sure I’d want to have a web clip sitting round with a mail account’s login credentials in it, but this could still prove quite handy for sites you access with no real security requirement (an iPhone web game site for example).

I have not managed to get my syntax quite right when trying out the http:// URLs with credentials attached.  So if any of you have, would be happy to hear your correct syntax tips!

Clipit was not yet on Installer when I last checked, so for now you’ll need to download it from Etrica’s site, HERE, and copy it across to your iPhone.
