Instapaper = Very Simple, Useful Bookmarking App

Instaper is a very simple, but very useful new web application, that lets you quickly bookmark pages that you don’t have time to read now, but want to get back to reading later.

The clever and cool thing about Instapaper is how basic and bare bones it is, so it’s beyond simple to use, which (for me) means you’re likely to use it a lot.  You register with just a username, which can be anything you like – you’re not required to use an email address unless you want to.  You can also leave your password as blank for quick and easy login – and given that you’re just bookmarking web pages, I really don’t see a need for worrying about security.

Once you’re registered, you drag the ‘Read Later’ bookmarklet to your Bookmarks Bar.  Then whenever you come across a page that looks great to read, but you can’t get to it right at that moment, just click the Read Later button on your toolbar and it saves it to your Instapaper page.  That’s it – no need to add tags or anything at all – just click it and forget it until you’ve got some time and feel like catching up on interesting stuff you marked for  yourself.instapaper3

The Instapaper page itself is also simple and free of clutter – just a clean listing of your Unread, Recently Read, and Recently Skipped items.

The bookmarklet button works fine in Firefox and Flock (my new favorite browser forever) and obviously Safari – not sure about that ‘other’ browser :)  So far, it will not work for me on the iPhone iself, but I haven’t messed with it much to try to make it happen.

And it’s got a custom WebClip for the iPhone – yay.
