One of my barometers for new software these days is the “Am I going to buy it” scale. Each app falls into four different categories.
Level 1- Not going to use it even if it is free
Level 2- Might use it if it is free or REALLY inexpensive
Level 3- Definitely goes on my software wish list
Level 4- Now where is the “Purchase” link…
The first software to which I will apply this scale is… iPhone Drive from Ecamm.
I just downloaded a trial version of their Mac-based iPhone Driv e software and am pretty impressed. iPhone Drive provides an amazing level of flexibility in accessing data on your iPhone (or iPod Touch) in both directions. In other words, you can now read from and write to your iPhone without having to use the iTunes interface (and deal with its limitations).
To what end? You might ask …
Well, for starters it allows you to use any spare memory on the iPhone (if you have it) as storage. (It does, however, require iPhone Drive on both the writing and the reading Macs.)
Moreover, it allows the user to pull Notes created on the iPhone on to the desktop in .txt form. A major bonus in my opinion.
In addition, it allows the user to play songs stored on the iPhone without the need for iTunes.
Read-only access to music, ringtones, podcasts and audio books also becomes possible with the program.
And finally, it provides a way, sans iTunes, to access the SMS message archive, call history, and stored photos.
It is a pretty impressive collection of utilities and at $19.95, with a free upgrade for prior users, it is a good value.
So where does iPhone Drive fall on my new scale?
It is a definite 3 and by tomorrow it may have moved into the 4 range (and on to my iMac).
If you are a Mac user it is definitely worth a try.
