For the last two weeks I have had the opportunity to use the Premium Leather Open Face iPhone Case from Prima Leather. The case is thin, light and well made.
In fact, I found the actual case to be far better constructed than the website pictures indicate. The sleek design protects the phone while detracting little from its sleek appearance. In fact, in my opinion, the case adds to it.
So how does this $29.95 case stack up against the ever-increasing number of iPhone cases?
Read on and find out…
Protection
The case wraps the iPhone in a thin but sturdy layer of high quality leather. While the corners are not fully covered, the case’s design still affords a significant amount of protection. A low profile snap at the top of the phone means there is no possibility of the phone slipping out. This is a significant advantage over other leather skins that provide no such security– a problem as the leather stretches with use. It should be noted, however, that this case, like any open face iPhone case, does little to protect the most delicate part of the iPhone- the screen. That, however, is a design choice and anyone choosing an open face case does so knowingly. Fortunately the
iPhone’s glass screen is by far the strongest and most scratch resistant screen on any phone today.
The case has a removable belt-clip and post. I was pleased with this since I am not a belt-clip kind of guy and liked the fact that when the post is removed the back of the case is largely flat. I like having the option to use the clip or not, but would be concerned about relying on the belt clip too much lest the post become loose and fall off. If you use the clip it would be worth checking daily to make sure the post is firmly inserted.
Ease of Use
If a case protects your phone but makes it hard to use it is probably not a good choice. At the same time, if a case leaves the phone accessible but doesn’t really protect it one has to wonder what the point is in the first place. The Premium Leather Open Face iPhone Case strikes the right balance between the two.![]()
Those of us who choose an open-face case do so in large part because of the high degree of usability it provides. As I noted in a recent review, I do not like having to flip a case open to take a call or check my email. But there is a trade-off between easy accessibility and protection. The more of one, the less of the other.
While in the Premium Leather Open Face iPhone Case the iPhone gains a high degree of protection while losing no functionality. The silent button, volume control, and camera all remain fully accessible. Cut-outs in the leather leave the speaker, microphone, ear piece and proximity sensor open. The case is well thought out and superbly executed. I did not like the seams in the leather on both sides of the case at first since they are slightly raised and, as a result, a but rough. Within a few days, however this was no longer a concern.
Whether a case is aesthetically pleasing or not is completely subjective. As someone who prefers an open face, sturdy, yet soft, black leather case this Prima case is about as good as it gets. I like the look and the feel– a lot. I like this case a lot. In fact, it is currently my case of choice. I guess that says it all.
