iPhone’s US smartphone market share numbers for the 4th quarter of 2007 were up again – to around 28% and running in 2nd place to RIM (Blackberry maker) with 41%.

Some of the other impressive numbers in a report from market analysis company Canalys include:

  • iPhone’s US smartphone market share rose from 19.5% in the third quarter of 2007 to 28% in the 4th quarter
  • All Windows Mobile device vendors combined stood at 21%, and Palm was way behind at 9%
  • iPhone also took 3rd place in the worldwide smartphone market, ahead of Motorola and behind only RIM and Nokia (although a very long way behind those two)

The last one seems an especially stunning result.  Third place in the worldwide smartphone market already – and that’s with only four countries selling it so far, and all three European countries that sell it, only started offering it part way through the quarter!

It seems that keeping its momentum may be even harder than achieving its initial success for Apple though …

Apple’s success as a new entrant is striking, but it will face challenges to keep its momentum going, said Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham in a statement. Historically, vendors with just one smart phone design, no matter how good, struggle, he said. That means Apple will have to create and refresh a portfolio of devices if it wants to increase its market share, he said.

Does that sound like a damn good argument for getting a 3G iPhone out there, and maybe even an ‘iPhone Nano’ version somewhere down the line?
