Let The SDK Rumor Frenzy Begin!

Having just passed the mid-point of February 2008 the rumor-mill is turning frenetic.

Why? If Apple holds true to its earlier comments the SDK, the first step toward Apple-blessed 3rd Party Applications, will be released in the next two weeks. Yes, we are now counting down to that fateful day.

And some details are beginning to emerge.

Among the possible bits of information to be gleaned from the current rumors is affirmation from 9 to 5 Mac- Apple Intelligence that iPhone apps will indeed be delivered via iTunes in the same manner that iPod games currently are. While this isn’t a surprise it does reinforce what many have been suspecting.

For those who have grown to love the over-the-air delivery of apps via Installer.app this may be a bit of a let down. Personally, I am more than happy using iTunes as the central means of getting data on and off the iPhone.

Also of interest is Tinycode’s announcement that they will no longer develop or support the software they have been delivering via Installer.app, suggesting that the shift to a more centralized (read- Apple controlled) iPhone software depository is already under way.

It is interesting watching iTunes, once a simple music store, turning into a major media and software distribution center.
