Using 3.0.1.
I watched a movie yesterday- it didn’t work today. I booked a ‘Genius’ appointment today and guess what- the guy hooked it up to their tv which was demonstrating Apple tv and it played all of my content without any issue. Typical.

I walked out of there with all the usual advice of do a factory reset, etc etc etc.

I cannot understand why it can just overnight switch from being a reasonably useful piece of equipment to a waste of money paperweight. This is really p*ssing me off.

But the problem has just recurred (on the last 30 mins of a film I watched without a problem a couple of days ago) and I have tried all of the above ideas and I am now well and truly stuck. Has anyone seen any new solutions that have come up in the last couple of months??

I have the latest 2.3.1 version of the software so clearly this is an Apple TV issue.

Content purchased from iTunes that I have watched before, no longer plays, I get the “HDCP isn’t supported…” message. I have seen the “HDMI (HDCP off)” indicator once before; I don’t know what triggered it then, but I was able to clear it by doing a reset.

This time I’ve done several resets, and a factory reset (back to version 2.0), then a software update to 2.3. I’ve tried every combination of HDMI resolution and color that plays on my TV, and in fact almost everything I’v been able to find on the web as possible solutions (the exception being to telnet into the ATV and download files from the web as described on http://kerdsri.com/2008/07/17/fix-hdcp-on-hdmi-controller-appletv/). All of this to no good effect.

My current configuration is version 2.3 software, a Sony AV box (STR-KS2000), and an older Sony TV. Bypassing the AV box and connecting directly to the TV has no effect on the problem.

I’ve read several suggestions that it’s the shielding on the HDMI cable, but I doubt it. I have no particular reason to believe that the ATV’s quires about and my TV’s response about HDCP would have become consistently corrupted by a shielding problem when the video seems to come through flawlessly on non-HDCP content.

It started just recently when I purchased and tried to play Iron Man. I got the message “this content requires HDCP for playback.” I’ve tried a lot of things to remedy the problem, to no avail. Now when I try to play “the other Bolynne girl” I get the same message. That didn’t happen when I bought and played it a month or so ago.

So if you get a solution to this, would appreciate some input. Thanks.

I’ve purchased content that played fine and then without warning would generate the same HDCP content message that you get.

I’m working on a solution. I’ll keep you posted.

Apple’s hardware is very intolerant in this way. Cables that work perfectly fine with a PS3, 360 or TiVo don’t necessarily work with Apple TV with HDCP turned on. I suspect a shielding issue and a massive recall avoidance.

The picture quality is pretty much indistinguishable from the 720p or 1080i I was getting via HDMI to DVI! 🙂
