Rack ‘Em – Play Pool on The iPhone

iPhone Pool game Pool2

Here’s a game that is an instant favorite for me – a Pool game for the iPhone from Adikus.com.  Despite being a lousy player, I enjoy playing pool a lot – and this new game has already got me pretty hooked.

In just its 1.1 version, Pool is already big fun to play, and very easy to get going with.  The way you line up and take shots is simple and feels quite natural to me – you set shot direction by touching the screen and then lining up a long green line with where you want the cue ball to strike one of the colored balls, and then set shot power via a smooth drag and release slider on the right-hand side of the table.

So far I’ve found that I’m getting the hang of the direction and power needed for a variety of shots pretty quickly – probably better than I do on a real pool table.

A few things that I think could be improved in future versions are:

  • It would be nice if your point of view moved around as you select different balls to shoot at – right now it stays rooted to the top end of the table where you first hit the break, even if you are lining up a shot down at the opposite end coming back up to a top pocket.
  • An option to save a game is needed.
  • It also should have an option to bomb out of a game where nothing is falling, and start a new one from within the app – instead of having to go all the way out of the app and back in in order to get a new game going.

Those things aside, I think this is a very good 1.x version and I’m definitely spending some quality time with it already.  Soon I’ll give it the ultimate realism test – I’ll check whether my game improves after a few beers 🙂

Pool is in Installer now – though you’ll need to add the Adikus source in order to see it.  The source address to add is: http://touchrepo.com/repo.xml.
