Springlets is a new iPhone site featuring a collection of ‘tiny apps’ that serve as handy shortcuts to add to your iPhone home screen, and save time on some common activities.
Right now there are a handful of springlets available in 3 main categories (Searches, Speed Dial, and Site Mods), but I imagine the number and variety of them will grow soon.
I tried out nearly all the available springlets, and the three most useful-looking for me are: Speed Dialer, Just Text, and Wikipedia Search …
The Speed Dialer offers an easy form to fill in a contact phone number, a name for the entry, and allows you to choose an icon color. That’s all you have to fill in and then tap one button to add to your home screen. There are other methods around for doing this, but this one may be the easiest and friendliest.
Just Text is a quick launcher for text-only versions of sites, for when you’re stuck with an Edge connection. The Yahoo Sports page shown in the right-hand side screencap at the top of this post is a Just Text rendered page.
Wikipedia Search saves you a couple of taps in getting to a search entry field for Wikipedia.
All of the springlets have custom webclip icons and look good on your home screen.
This seems like an idea that could take off quite nicely, as there should be great scope for coming up with a whole lot more of these time-saving shortcuts.
