Last night was a very long night for me. Did the geeky / nerdy thing o
n a Friday night and decided it was a great time to get my iPhone updated to the latest 1.1.4 firmware and jailbreak it again.
I’d been waiting for Zibri to release a ZiPhone version for this firmware, and sure enough ZiPhone 2.5 showed up yesterday. So I did my little bits of prep for updating and restoring – made sure I got any pics I wanted from the Camera Roll across to my PC, took screencaps of home screens (to remember apps I had installed), and of Sources pages in Installer, and the themes listing in Summerboard Prefs.
That’s probably overkill for most, and there is probably a cleverer way to grab all that info, but the method works for me, and I just keep those screencap images popped open in front of me as I setup the iPhone again after the new jailbreak.
I should mention that my long night was really nothing to do with ZiPhone, or the jailbreak process; but rather just my own carelessness. Here’s a quick rundown of the steps I went through and how it all went:
- Started with a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone.
- Restored to 1.1.3 via the Shift/Restore click and choosing the 1.1.3 firmware, rather than the newest version – in order to start with a ‘clean’ version of 1.1.3 before updating.
- Setup the iPhone as a new phone, no restore settings etc. from backup – again, just to keep it cleaner – and photos, few videos, music, contacts etc. are all on my PC to sync back later.
- Updated to 1.1.4 via iTunes.
- Synced and made sure phone, safari, joining WiFi network, pairing BT headset worked.
- Ran ZiPhone 2.5 and chose to jailbreak and activate (I’m with AT&T and think this was a bad choice, should have chosen just the jailbreak option and let activation be handled by iTunes)
- Synced and checked that phone, joining WiFi network, Safari, pairing BT headset, and some other stuff worked.
- My bad at this point – I did NOT check that all standard apps were working. So later, much later, after reinstalling tons of apps, I noticed that YouTube was up the spout – got ‘Cannot connect to YouTube’ every time. This may have been due to my choice of jailbreak + activate in ZiPhone, or may have just been a fluke (as I’ve seen tons of forum entries for non-jailbroken folks with my same issue) – but it was buggered for whatever reason.
- So … kicked myself (hard) for not finding this sooner – then restored again to try to get past YouTube issue – and it worked fine after a second restore and a second run of ZiPhone 2.5, this time choosing jailbreak only!
After that, reinstalled apps, used the TWK: 1.1.3×4 Swap tweak from the Fight Club source (http://dezign999.com/repo) in order to trick Summerboard into installing under 1.1.4, chucked favorite themes back on.
Apart from my own mistakes, the whole process was incredibly easy, smooth, and very fast.
If you’re thinking of trying out jailbreak on 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 firmware, I highly recommend ZiPhone.
