MPG – iPhone App To Replace Your Car’s Log Book

MPG iPhone app MPG iPhone app

MPG is a log book for your car. MPG replaces the little notepad in your glovebox with an intelligent tracker. MPG tracks fuel, oil changes, tune-ups, inspections, tire rotations, windshield wipers, car washes, trips, and other miscellaneous expenses for your car. It generates statistics such as average miles per gallons, total cost of gas, and average price of gas. Fuel economy is calculated for the fuel entries. Time, distance and time per distance are calculated for trips. US, Metric, UK, and Canadian units are supported.

A first version of MPG has just been ported to the iPhone (it’s originally a Palm OS program) by Catamount Software, who are also the makers of PocketMoney for iPhone.

This looks like it could become a very popular app for all those who look after their vehicles lovingly and like to keep an accurate record of their histories.  As with many things, there are big advantages in being able to have all your information, about one or all of your vehicles, in your pocket – as opposed to spread out across any number of paper-based systems.

MTG’s first version boasts fairly basic looks.  Its not going to win an interface beauty contest, but it seems easy to work with and appears to have you covered for recording just about everything you might need to relating to your vehicles. You can track trips, services, fuel consumption, and make general notes. MPG3

The app comes with a handful of .png image files for a few car and truck types (and one boat) – but I’d imagine you can easily add your own just by copying a right-sized image file to the right folder (the /VehicleIcons folder it looks like).

Catamount have made clear that they are planning for their iPhone applications to cross over to the Apple sanctioned App Store environment – and it is to be a paid-for app, priced at $19.95 – although the current version seems to have an unlimited trial.

Some features which are due to be added in future versions include: Reports, Service Alarms, and Filters.
