The Canadian government has released a list of bidders in the upcoming wireless auction scheduled to determine the future of Canada’s cell industry. This is of particular interest to me, because of course, I am Canadian (as regular readers know! If you didn’t, now you do!). Big players and smaller newcomers are on the list. The big 3, Bell, Rogers and Telus are all players of course, and are on the list.
The auction is scheduled for May 27th, and will follow the same format used in the US for the 700MHz band… However this one will be for the 2GHz spectrum. It will be the first in Canada to follow an FCC-style auction which will (in the end) grant pieces of the pie to bidders that place the highest bid for a given area.
If some new entrants are winners in the auctions, it could prove to drive down the ridiculous plan prices in Canada. More competition would be a good thing for Canada… We’d see more ‘unlimited’ plans pop up, and hopefully one day soon…the release of the iPhone to Canadians.
