Sugarsync- a Sweet Way To Store Your Data on the Web

Sugarsync

I have been testing Sugarsync, a new web-based storage and synchronization service for the past few weeks.  Sugarsync is an excellent way to use the "cloud" to its fullest potential by not only providing high capacity storage at a reasonable price but offering quick, resource light,  background synchronization between devices.

This has been especially important for me since I use an iMac, a MacBook Air AND a Windows XP Tablet Edition slate. I currently have ten GB of my most important data in my Sugarsync account.

Sugarsync not only syncs the data between all three machines seamlessly, but I can also access the most current versions of all my files through a web portal from any web enabled computer. This means that having a huge hard drive on my notebooks is less important than ever– a good thing since my MBA only has an 80gb hard drive.

Moreover, any files I might need to access offline are automatically copied to my hard drive once the initial setup is complete.

The coolest feature of Sugarsync, at least for me, is that it has an amSugarsync on iPhoneazing iPhone-optimized portal. I can easily and quickly see all my current files along with recently deleted ones. And while I cannot actually view most of the documents directly on the iPhone (yet) with a few keyboard taps I can email any document to myself or anyone else, for that matter.

This would have come in quite handy a few months ago when I got to a meeting only to discover that I had forgotten some of the key documents I needed. With Sugarsync I could have sent them to myself or anyone else within seconds.

Sugarsync is coming out of beta on March 20th. If you sign up prior to April 1st you can get a steep discount on your first year’s service. I like Sugarsync enough that I signed a two year contract for 60gb of storage. It is yet another great way to use the iPhone as part of my overall work.

    So… what’s it cost?

There are a range of prices depending on the storage you need. I paid $99 for 60gb for the year. (That is with the pre-launch discount)

I’m not sure if I consider that to be pricy or not. Definitely a better price than say .mac which only gives you 10GB for $100 … So its a decent deal, just with a lot less functionality than .mac

I guess I’ll keep my eye out for the “official” launch and see what kind of pricing they’re going to offer.
