So everyone who has been to this blog and read the posts knows there is one application that I literally end up jailbreaking my iPhone for – and its Wallpaper from iApp-a-Day. Also if you read this blog (or JAMM) you know I’m not one to hide my emotions. So anyway, I was depressed when Wallpaper stopped working there for a while. I was happy when it started working again and I was STOKED when I saw Apple iPhone School mention version 2.0 came out.
BUT… unfortunately something has happened to my Wallpaper. Someone added a ton of cool and a ton of suck. Let’s touch on the cool.
The Cool:
You can choose not to share your wallpaper. Sorta like being a P2P leecher and not seeding.
The gallery. Very cool. – basically Wallpaper now keeps an "on device" gallery of the wallpapers you decided you wanted to keep.
Flagging. Cool … but useless. More on that in a second.
I can set a wallpaper from my Gallery. Cool
And now for the suck + some screenshots
The Suck:
Not forcing people to share sorta sucks. While I like the option, I think more often than not people are going to decline sharing their wallpaper if they’ve got a personal type one. I can understand that … but change it before you launch it and share something.
Gallery. I already decided I like a wallpaper and put in my gallery. Where does that go and how do I get them off my device? Why not create a Camera Roll section for wallpapers and keep them there?
Flagging. I don’t know why I would want to flag something. Flagging causes it to NOT show up in my gallery, and I would have to SSH to var/mobile/Library/Wallpaper in order to get them off the device. They are not shown anywhere else… and I’m likely to forget they are there. No longer can I save to my camera roll and then use Windows Camera to get it off. SUCK!
In order to change to a wallpaper in my gallery I have to launch the app and go to my gallery. Which is fine… but I have to wait for 10 seconds or so while the app does "something" and I stare at my current wallpaper. You can’t access the gallery until the application rolls over to the first image from other users. And even choosing not to share makes it sit there for what seems like an eternity. WTF>?>!!
Overall – I’m pretty depressed. The switching between shared wallpapers is a lot slower than it ever was before, its got a cool new gallery function, but now I can’t copy wallpapers by using a normal utility like the Camera app on Windows or iPhoto. Now I have to ssh to my device to get the images off. All in all between the need to now SSH to my iPhone to get wallpapers and a painfully long delay between new images… I want my old Wallpaper back. The cool is definitely getting its butt kicked by the suck.
EDIT: The slowness of switching between shared wallpapers seems to have resolved. I’m not sure what it was – I wasn’t do anything else on the iPhone and my WiFi was turned on… so who knows. Anyway, the slowness was gone when I just fired the app up again (for like the 10th time). Unfortunately, that still doesn’t solve the fact that I have to use SSH to get wallpapers off. I’m a bit happier now – but still I want the old one back.
