Hidden iPhone Screenshot Capability Uncovered

The iPhone developers at RipDev (makers of Caterpillar and other apps) have discovered a hidden method for generating screencaps on the iPhone, using just a combination of hardware button presses on the iPhone itself.

After editing a Springboard preference via a .plist file, you can invoke a screen capture simply by holding down the Home key and toggling the mute switch at the top left side of the iPhone.  Once you do this, the screen goes white just for an instant, and the screencap is saved to the Camera Roll.

You can now just install the Screenshot Enabler app in order to turn on this capability.  I installed this via the iClarified source, though you will also find if you add the RipDev source, which is: http://repository.ripdev.com.

One of the features of this screenshot method is that it generates a TIF image at a substantially larger file size than the compressed JPEG images created by 3rd party screenshot utilities, and this should be a higher quality image. 

I’ve seen a few people saying they are seeing some instability after installing this screenshot enabler program (spontaneous reboots and similar), but so far I have not seen any problems.
